The morning coffee

This morning I woke up with a slight headache and really heavy eyes (not from partying, but just going to bed a bit late). Nonetheless, the first thing that came to my mind was “I need coffee!”. Before doing anything else (i.e. cleaning my room, making breakfast, turning on Facebook, etc), I made my way down to the kitchen and made a fresh cup of Illy coffee.

One or two sips later, I was ready to start my day, and begin to function properly. I’m sure I am not the only person who thinks of coffee when they first wake up, or needs it to get the day started. That moment when you open the can of coffee, and the aroma fills the rest of the house, is probably one of my favorite ones of the day…even if for some reason I have to wake up at 6am, and I’m not a morning person at all, the smell of coffee makes me forget about the long day ahead.

Anyhow, what I want to say is that the morning coffee, that first cup of the day, is something special. To me it means that I can properly wake up, solve a Sudoku or two, check what’s going on around the world, or who’s dating who on Facebook. Though I tend to a lot of times do the same during the mid-day, afternoon, and evening coffee (like I said, I am obsessed with coffee), like Oliver Wendell Homes, Sr., once said: “The morning cup of coffee has an exhilaration about it which the cheering influence of the afternoon or evening cup of tea [or coffee] cannot be expected to reproduce.”

So here it goes. My first blog post. It feels a bit strange putting my thoughts out to the rest of the world, but I guess that is the whole purpose of a blog. Share your thoughts, beliefs, passions, etc. Every blog has a purpose and a theme, and pretty much anyone can blog. For everything that I write I won’t do much, if any editing. Whatever comes to my mind I will write it down.

So what will I blog about? When I decided to start a blog I wanted to write about my passions, but couldn’t think of what in particular. My biggest passions, or you could also say obsessions include airplanes and flying, traveling around the world, catching up with friends, running, and finally, coffee. This last one will be the focus of my blog (in case you haven’t figured that out yet from my blog title).

Why coffee? I think I have a pretty strong reputation among friends and family that I am obsessed/passionate about coffee. I’ve also recently purchased a book called “The Connoisseur’s guide to Coffee: Discover the World’s Most Exquisite Coffee Beans” by Jon Thorn and Michael Segal. Definitely recommend this book for purchase if you have any interest in coffee, its origins, different types, etc.

Coffee for me is something that I honestly could not live without. And Yes, I have no problem standing up and saying “hi, my name is Marko and I am a coffee addict.” I’ve been drinking coffee since I was about 13, and in all honesty I haven’t gone more than like 3 days without at least a cup of coffee since then. I love the smell of coffee in the morning when I wake up, and that first sip of the day. I love meeting up with friends over a cup of cappuccino and catch up on things, talk about anything from girls to politics and other current affairs. I also love just sitting down in a café and do some people watching (i.e. wonder where they’re in a hurry, or what the couple on the next table is arguing about). Essentially I just love, love, love, coffee, coffee, coffee J

I could continue writing about why and how my passion for coffee grew and whatnot, but I’ll leave that up for the next few posts. Every now and then I will also rate the various café’s I go to in Sheffield, UK (where I am studying at the moment), as well as Slovenia (where I’m from), and other places I visit around the world, and determine which one is the best, in terms of the best coffee, atmosphere, service, etc.
